Bandera Azúl, the blue flag, is one of the most sought after possessions for communities bordering the water throughout Costa Rica.
The Bandera Azúl is recognition by agencies including, but not limited to, the Costa Rican Water and Sewer Agency (AyA), the Tourism Board, the National Electricity Institute (ICE), the Costa Rican Network of Private Nature Reserves, the National Chamber of Tourism, and the Ministries of Agriculture and Education of the cleanest beaches throughout the country based on a tough list of standards. Being on the list is a great feat and requires the community to do its part in making sure that the beaches remain pristine and that the water has minimal pollution, if any. Beyond the cleanliness of beaches, is further dedication to environmental awareness, climate change mitigation, sustainable design, and the promotion of community health. So it's a pretty big deal. This award is given each year to the beach communities that meet the standards set forth for the good of the locals and visitors, national tourism, and the world; ensuring a contribution to a cleaner planet and a more knowledgeable and conscious global community. We are proud that our home base, Playa Sámara, is among the beach communities chosen for the 2016 Bandera Azúl Award. Thank you to our community for working so hard for a cleaner, more educated, and healthy town! Come visit and see this award-winning beach town for yourself! Comments are closed.
