Jairo ZúñigaSurf Instructor/Local Guide
Professional Surfer English/Spanish Jairo is a native of Playa Sámara, Costa Rica. He considers it one of his greatest blessings to have been born in this surf paradise! Jairo began surfing at the age of 6 using surfboards given to him by visiting surfers from around the world. With practice, he began to participate in local contests until reaching the CNS (Circuito Nacional de Surf - the National Surf Circuit of Costa Rica) at the age of 17. After competing, he decided that, for him, it was better to have more experience and to share surfing with others. Since then, he has found a way to balance teaching and professional surfing! His desire to improve drove Jairo to travel and to challenge himself with different waves and levels of difficulty. Because of this, he has surfed all levels of breaks along both the Pacific and Caribbean sides of Costa Rica. While he improved his own skill set, he also instructed beginner surfers of all ages. In 2012, Jairo visited and surfed in Peru where he learned about surfing in a range of water temperatures. Afterwards, he moved to the United States where he joined Skudin Surf School in New York to work as an instructor and to gain knowledge about teaching surfers of all experience levels. Throughout his travels in Nicaragua, Peru, Mexico, the US, Canada, Norway, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica, Jairo has been lucky to have friends show him the best of breaks and cultures along the way. He has a passion for teaching, lots of patience, and love for surfing. This is what drove Jairo's dream of sharing the Costa Rican surf with you! Jairo is the current Masters Shortboard Champion for ESA NY and a competitor in the Mens Open Shortboard on the Costa Rica National Surf Circuit and holds certificates from the International Surfing Association (ISA) as a surf instructor and Lifeguard. |
